Beach in Halifax area closed due to toxin-producing algal blooms in lake

HALIFAX — City officials in the Halifax area have closed a popular lake beach after the discovery of a toxin-producing blue-green algal bloom.

The beach at Springfield Lake in Middle Sackville is closed on Saturday.

Blue-green algae occur naturally in freshwater environments and can grow when weather conditions are calm and warm.

Some species of blue-green algae produce toxins, which can pose a risk to pets and humans.

Residents are being asked to keep their pets away from the water and avoid areas where blue-green algae are visible or areas that are closed to swimming.

City officials say anyone who comes into contact with blue-green algae or who ingests water containing it could experience skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea — and children and immune — compromised. individuals are at a higher risk of becoming ill.
