IRCC lifted the temporary policy exemption from biometric requirements for certain foreign nationals applying for PR (permanent residence) on June 14, 2023.
According to the official IRCC program delivery updatethis temporary public policy will no longer apply to applications for permanent residency submitted on or after June 14, 2023.
This temporary policy was introduced during the COVID, exempting foreigners applying for permanent residency from providing biometrics.
This only applied to applicants who have previously provided their biometrics when submitting another immigration/visa application within the past 10 years.
PR applications submitted before June 14, 2023 that meet the above requirement will continue to be treated with a biometric waiver.
So all foreign nationals applying for a permanent residence permit (PR) must now submit their biometric data.
What is Biometrics?
Biometrics are the distinctive physical characteristics of an individual that can be used to identify them.
In the context of Canadian immigration, biometrics refer to fingerprints and a photo, which are required for Canadian immigration.
Why Does Canadian Immigration Use Biometrics?
Biometrics are essential for establishing an individual’s identity. While this may not seem like an essential measure at this point, the Canadian government advises that biometrics contribute to the safety of Canadian immigrants in multiple ways.
For example, having biometrics makes it harder for someone to commit identity theft by fabricating, swiping, or using your identity.
In addition, biometric data facilitates the resolution of problems or errors that may arise when an individual’s name, date of birth and/or place of birth is similar to that of another individual.
I have a work permit in Canada. Do I have to provide biometrics if I apply for PR after June 14; even though I gave my biometrics 4 years ago?
After June 14, 2023, if you are applying for permanent residency under Family Class or Economic Class or Refugee Affairs and you are between the ages of 14 and 79, you must provide your fingerprints, even if you have already provided the biometrics and they’re still valid.
