Blue Jays reunite with Kiner-Falefa, claiming utility infielder off waivers from Pirates

The Toronto Blue Jays made a roster move on Sunday, claiming infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. This acquisition comes as the Blue Jays look to solidify their position atop the AL East standings.

In order to make room for Kiner-Falefa on the roster, right-handed pitcher Yimi Garcia was transferred to the 60-day injured list. Garcia, who has been dealing with elbow issues, will undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

Kiner-Falefa had a productive season with the Pirates, hitting .264 with one home run and 35 RBIs in 119 games. The eight-year veteran has also had stints with the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees before signing a two-year, $15 million contract with Toronto prior to the 2024 season. He previously played 83 games for the Blue Jays before being traded to Pittsburgh at last year’s deadline.

The Blue Jays took to Twitter to announce the roster moves, welcoming Kiner-Falefa back to the team and wishing Garcia a speedy recovery. The addition of Kiner-Falefa adds depth to the Blue Jays’ infield and provides versatility with his ability to play multiple positions.

Overall, the Blue Jays are hopeful that Kiner-Falefa’s presence will bolster their lineup as they continue their push towards the postseason. Stay tuned for more updates on how Kiner-Falefa will impact the team’s performance moving forward.
