Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced the expansion of Joint Task Force Alpha (JTFA), an initiative to thwart transnational criminal organizations and cartels that fuel human trafficking and smuggling.

During a press conference in Tampa, Florida, Bondi emphasized the significant cost and deadly consequences of human smuggling networks, warning that these criminal organizations are putting lives at risk.

Bondi highlighted JTFA as a crucial tool in combating organized smuggling networks, particularly those led by cartels and “coyotes” who profit from individuals attempting to cross U.S. borders.

“We are intensifying our efforts to investigate and prosecute these crimes more aggressively than ever before, with Joint Task Force Alpha leading the charge,” she stated.

Bondi reiterated the deadly impact of human smuggling operations, stressing the exorbitant costs and tragic loss of lives associated with these criminal activities. She shared details of a smuggling ring that exploited vulnerable individuals, including children, for financial gain.

“These criminals charged victims exorbitant fees, engaged in money laundering through platforms like Zelle, and amassed substantial profits from their illicit operations,” Bondi explained.

Under President Donald Trump’s administration, JTFA has successfully brought charges against 56 individuals involved in smuggling conspiracies, showcasing the task force’s effectiveness in combating these criminal enterprises.

Additional Texas officials detailed harrowing accounts of smuggling operations, including instances where young children were exposed to THC poisoning through drug-laced gummies provided by traffickers to sedate them during transit.

Describing the callous nature of cartel operations, U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei emphasized the disregard for human life and well-being exhibited by these criminal organizations in pursuit of profits.

Launched under former Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2021, JTFA has expanded its focus to target human-smuggling and trafficking networks across Mexico, Central America, and now extends to operations along the northern and maritime borders of the United States.

With over 300 arrests, 240 convictions, and numerous successful prosecutions, JTFA has made significant strides in dismantling smuggling networks, seizing illicit assets, and disrupting criminal activities that exploit vulnerable individuals for financial gain.
