Brawl breaks out at PA HS basketball game; adults arrested

A Pennsylvania high school basketball game turned chaotic this past Friday night when a wild brawl erupted in the bleachers, leading to arrests and a double forfeiture in the first round of the state tournament.

The game between Uniontown and Meadville High Schools, which was part of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s 5A state tournament, took a violent turn as parents in the stands got into a physical altercation. Video footage of the incident shows two adult men throwing punches, causing a commotion that forced coaches and referees to intervene and separate both teams.

The brawl escalated when one man, wearing a white jersey, left his seat in the bleachers and confronted someone from the opposing team. This sparked a chain reaction, with another man from Meadville jumping into the stands to retaliate. The situation further deteriorated when a Meadville player chased a fan who appeared to provoke him, resulting in a violent altercation that spilled onto the court.

Police officers were called to the scene and ended up arresting multiple individuals involved in the brawl. Meadville police stated their intention to charge several fans and players with disorderly conduct for their roles in the altercation.

As tensions continued to rise, the game was ultimately called off with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter, with Meadville leading Uniontown 63-55. The PIAA’s official bracket indicated a double forfeiture, with neither team advancing to the next round. Hershey, the team scheduled to face the winner of the Uniontown-Meadville matchup, has since moved on to the quarterfinals.

PIAA executive director Robert Lombardi has requested reports from the schools involved in the incident and has refrained from making further comments until he receives them. The governing body did not initially respond to requests for comment.
