Brookfield motel shooting suspect’s bail hearing adjourned until Nov. 1

A man who was the subject of an emergency alert and an arrest warrant in connection with an Oct. 15 shooting at a Brookfield motel appeared in Truro provincial court Monday.

RCMP apprehended Darren Trevor Jackson, 52, of Truro on Friday at a home on Highway 311 in Nuttby, Colchester County.

He was scheduled to have a bail hearing Monday on 10 charges from the incident, including two counts of attempted murder with a firearm, but defence lawyer Ian Hutchison asked that the hearing be adjourned until Nov. 1.

Jackson is also charged with careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, two counts of breaching a firearms prohibition, aggravated assault and driving while prohibited.

In addition, he faces charges of assault, sexual assault and two counts of administering a stupefying substance for the purpose of overcoming resistance. Police allege those offences were committed in Truro between July 17 and Oct. 17, according to court records.

RCMP received a call Oct. 15 at about 9 p.m. from someone saying they might have heard gunshots as they were driving past the Sunrise Motel on Highway 2 in Brookfield about 30 minutes earlier.

An RCMP news release said a man allegedly shot at a woman in her vehicle at the motel. Although she was uninjured, the gunfire hit another woman in the same car.

Everyone involved in the incident then fled the scene, RCMP said.

The two victims were located at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro. One woman, 30, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the other, 29, was uninjured.

RCMP issued an emergency alert that night at 11:10 telling people to report any sightings of Jackson but not to approach him because he was believed to have a firearm.

The alert was cancelled Oct. 16 at 9:30 a.m. after it was deemed there was no immediate threat to public safety. In an update that afternoon, RCMP said Jackson’s vehicle, a dark 2016 GMC Sierra pickup, had been found on Arthur Street in Truro and seized by police.

On Oct. 18, RCMP announced they had obtained a warrant for Jackson’s arrest.

Before remanding Jackson at the end of Monday’s proceeding, Judge Bryna Hatt ordered him to have no contact with the two women named in the charges.

Given the nature of some of the allegations, the judge placed a publication ban on the identities of the women at the request of Crown attorney Michelle Jessome.
