Canada cruises to 2nd straight U18 world men’s hockey title for 1st time

The under-18 world men’s hockey championship gold-medal game was a thrilling showdown between Canada and Sweden at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. Brady Martin was the star of the show, scoring twice to help lead Canada to a dominant 7-0 victory. Netminder Jack Ivankovic was also a standout performer, stopping 28 shots and recording back-to-back shutouts in the tournament.
Xavier Villeneuve, Jackson Smith, Ethan Czata, Braeden Cootes, and Jack Nesbitt all found the back of the net for Canada, who asserted their dominance early with a 2-0 lead after the first period. The team continued to pile on the goals, going up 5-0 heading into the third period. Ben Kindel contributed with a pair of assists, and a total of fourteen players registered at least one point for the championship-winning team.
This victory marked Canada’s second consecutive gold medal at the under-18 championship, a historic achievement for the team. Head coach Cory Stillman praised his players for their performance, stating, “We got better as the tournament went on. Tonight was the best game we played, and we came out winners.”
Jackson Smith, who played for the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League, expressed his joy at winning the gold medal, highlighting the team’s camaraderie and unity. Both Ivankovic and Martin were named to the tournament all-star team, with Ivankovic also receiving the award for best goaltender of the tournament.
In the bronze-medal game, the United States secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Slovakia in overtime. Ben Kevan was the hero for the Americans, scoring the game-winning goal at 5:37 of the extra period. Jan Chovan of Slovakia had earlier tied the game with just under seven minutes left in the third period, sending the game into overtime.
Blake Fiddler, Jacob Kvasnicka, and Cole McKinney also found the back of the net for the United States, who overcame a 2-1 deficit heading into the third period. Michal Svrcek scored twice for Slovakia, who put up a strong fight despite being outshot 33-26.
