More military families could soon qualify for this benefit

The “Benefits that Endure for Lifetimes of Service (BELO’S) Act” is a new proposal that aims to expand the eligibility criteria for military families to qualify for lifetime National Park passes. This act would specifically benefit Gold Star families and service members who passed away due to service-connected illnesses or incidents, such as training accidents, serious illnesses, or injuries.
Currently, Gold Star families and veterans can obtain a free lifetime pass, as well as individuals with permanent disabilities, regardless of their military status. However, the BELO’S Act seeks to broaden the scope of eligibility to include families of service members who died from service-related causes.
The legislation is named after U.S. Army First Sergeant Marc Belo, who tragically passed away from cancer related to his military service in May 2024. Representative Gabe Evans, R-Colo., who sponsored the bill, worked closely with Belo during a deployment in 2012 and is proud to honor his memory through this initiative.
The passes are currently offered through a partnership with the National Parks Service and Operation Live Well, but the BELO’S Act would amend the Federal Land Recreation Enhancement Act to extend eligibility beyond the traditional criteria for Gold Star families.
The bill has garnered bipartisan support, with Representative Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif., co-sponsoring the legislation. It has been referred to the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Agriculture Committee for further consideration.
This initiative highlights the ongoing efforts to recognize and support the families of fallen heroes, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten. By expanding access to lifetime National Park passes, the BELO’S Act seeks to provide lasting benefits to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
