Canada wins twice on opening day at world mixed doubles curling championship
The World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship kicked off with a strong start for the Canadian duo of Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant at Willie O’Ree Place in Fredericton, N.B. on Saturday. The team secured two wins on the opening day of the tournament, defeating Germany 10-5 in the early draw and narrowly edging out Denmark 6-4 in the late draw.
In their match against Germany, Canada took an early lead by scoring three points in the third end, putting them ahead 4-2. They extended their lead with two more points in the fifth end, making it 5-3. Although the Germans managed to score two points in the sixth end, closing the gap to 6-5, Canada responded with a strong performance in the seventh end, scoring four points to secure a decisive victory.
Facing off against Denmark, Canada maintained a close game, leading 2-1 after two ends. The score was tied at 3-3 after five ends, but Canada took control with a two-point score in the sixth end, leading 5-3. They held Denmark to one point in the seventh end and sealed the win with a single point in the eighth end.
After the first day of competition, Canada, Italy, Scotland, and Sweden all finished with perfect 2-0 records in Group A. China and Finland both had 1-1 records, while Denmark, Germany, Korea, and the Netherlands struggled with 0-2 records. Canada’s next challenge will be against Sweden in their only game on Sunday.
The impressive performance of Peterman and Gallant has set a strong foundation for Canada’s campaign in the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship.
