Canada’s Conners level with tournament favourite Scheffler after strong opening round at Masters

Corey Conners Surges into Contention at The Masters

As the golfing world focused on the likes of defending champion Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, Canadian Corey Conners quietly made his presence felt on the opening day of The Masters with a stellar performance that put him firmly in contention.

Conners, who has a history of strong finishes at Augusta National, showcased his skills with an impressive four-under-par 68 that saw him top the leaderboard at the conclusion of his round. This left him in a share of second place, just four shots behind first-round leader Justin Rose.

The 33-year-old, who has been in solid form this season with multiple top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour, expressed his love for the iconic venue and its challenging layout. “It’s a golf course that I love coming to. I don’t know how you couldn’t love coming here. It’s a spectacular event, a spectacular golf course,” Conners shared.

Despite a shaky start that saw him struggle in a greenside bunker on the seventh hole, Conners managed to chip in for par, kickstarting a late surge that included birdies on three of his final four holes. His confidence on Augusta National’s fast and undulating greens was evident as he sunk crucial putts to climb up the leaderboard.

“I have confidence I’m getting started online, and I was able to hole some nice ones today,” Conners remarked, highlighting his comfort on the challenging putting surfaces.

With plenty of golf left to be played, Conners finds himself in a promising position to make a run at the coveted Green Jacket. Drawing inspiration from fellow Canadian Mike Weir, who claimed victory at The Masters in 2003, Conners is determined to follow in his footsteps and etch his name in Masters history.
