Labor day in Halifax: what is open and closed?

Labor Day Weekend: A Final Summer Celebration

As children prepare to head back to school, families are gearing up for one last hurrah this Labor Day weekend.

With the promise of warm weather and clear skies, it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy some outdoor activities before autumn sets in. The Air Quality Advisories have been lifted for HRM, and temperatures are expected to reach a high of 25°C with sunny skies on Monday.

Before heading out for the weekend, it’s important to take note of any closures or service changes that may affect your plans.

Shopping and Dining

While most supermarkets will be closed on Monday, Dartmouth’s Gateway Meat Market, Dave’s Fruit and Fruit Market, and the Wolfville farm market will remain open with potential reduced hours. All NSLC stores will be closed for the holiday.

Entertainment and Recreation

Shopping centers such as the Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, and Sunnyside Mall will be closed on Labor Day. Municipal recreational facilities and swimming pools will also be closed, with outdoor swimming pools and splash pads having already ended their season.

Beaches will remain open, but beach amenities may be limited. The Emera Oval will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting.

Municipal Services

Solid waste collection will be postponed to an alternative day on Monday. Public library branches will be closed, along with city administrative and employment services. The 311 contact center will only be available for urgent matters.

Transportation

Municipal transit services will operate on a holiday schedule, with the Alderney -spring boat running every half hour. There will be no Woodside Ferry service on Labor Day. Street parking in Halifax will be free on Monday.
