Canadian rugby sevens men win three straight at Challenger Series event in Poland

Canada’s Men Secure Semifinal Berth in World Rugby Challenger Series

Canada’s men’s rugby sevens team had a successful day on Friday, securing wins over Madagascar, Japan, and Portugal to advance to the semifinals of World Rugby’s Challenger Series. The team’s strong performance puts them one step closer to reclaiming their spot on the elite HSBC Sevens circuit.

In their first match, Canada defeated Madagascar with a score of 29-24. They followed this up with a dominant 40-10 victory over Japan and a hard-fought 17-10 win against Portugal. These victories solidified Canada’s position at the top of the Challenger Series standings as they aim to secure a place in the promotion/relegation tournament.

Having finished second and third in the previous Challenger Series events held in Cape Town, the Canadian team arrived in Poland as the frontrunners. They were closely followed by Germany, Portugal, Chile, and Samoa in the standings.

Canada’s journey in the Challenger Series has been filled with highs and lows. In the first event, they finished as runners-up after a tough 33-7 defeat to Chile in the final. In the second event, they claimed third place by defeating Japan 28-15 in the consolation final.

The top four teams at the end of the Poland stop will earn a chance to compete in the promotion/relegation tournament scheduled for May 3-4 in Carson, Calif. This tournament will determine which teams will secure a spot in the next season’s HSBC Sevens circuit.

After finishing last in the elite HSBC Sevens circuit last year and being relegated from the top tier, Canada is determined to make a strong comeback. Their journey in the Challenger Series is a crucial step towards regaining their position among the top teams in international rugby sevens.
