Canadian Women’s Team 8 takes silver at World Cup event in Switzerland

Canada’s eighth women’s team earned a silver medal at the World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, Switzerland, on Sunday, finishing just under a second behind gold medalist Great Britain.

The final was a four-boat race, contested between 2020 Olympic gold medalist Canada, the 2022 World Championships gold medalist Romanians, and World Rowing Cup II champion and runner-up Australia and Great Britain respectively, who topped the podium in Varese, Italy. , event in June.

The Australians held a commanding lead for the first 1,000 metres, while Great Britain drew level with the Canadians and Romanians for second after a poor start.

When Romania fell soon after, the Canadian and British sides continued to push to close the gap to within half a second of Australia in the 1,500 metres, and both teams overtook the reigning champions with 300 meters to go.

Now on the homestretch, both teams continued to match each other blow-for-stroke, with Great Britain eventually triumphing with a time of 6:02.82. Canada crossed the finish line in 6:03.57, Australia took bronze in 6:06.09.

Canada finished less than a second behind the winners for a podium finish at the World Cup event in Switzerland.

This is the first medal on the 2023 World Cup circuit for Canada’s eighth women’s team after finishing third in the final in Italy in June, but did not officially secure a medal as the race was only contested between three boats.

The silver was also Canada’s only medal in the A-final on the day of the event, as the eighth men’s team finished sixth to finish the competition.
