Canadian women’s volleyball team eliminated by U.S. in Round of 16 at world championships

Canada suffered a tough defeat on Sunday, as they were eliminated from the FIVB volleyball women’s world championship after a 3-0 loss to the United States in the Round of 16 in Bangkok.

The Canadian team struggled to find their rhythm against the strong American defense, particularly in blocking where they went 0-7 in the first set. The U.S. dominated in blocks throughout the match, finishing with an 11-6 advantage. They also outperformed Canada in kills, with a 42-38 lead.

Despite Canada having one more ace than the U.S. (4-3), they gave up more points due to errors (19-12). Opposite player Anna Smrek led Canada with 12 points in the match. However, Canada was missing key players such as Kiera Van Ryk, Alexa Gray, and setter Brie O’Reilly.

“I cannot complain with this group of players,” said Canada head coach Giovanni Guidetti. “They all experienced something new this summer… create a super learning environment that will be the base for a great future.”

On the American side, outside hitters Avery Skinner and Sarah Franklin both contributed 13 points each to secure the victory.

The match can be watched in full on the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship website, where Canada faced off against the United States in the Round of 16. The intense battle between the two teams showcased the high level of competition in the championship.

It was a disappointing end for Canada, but they can take away valuable lessons from their experience in the tournament. The team showed resilience and determination, which will undoubtedly serve them well in future competitions.
