Carney apologizes to Montreal massacre survivor running for Liberals after getting name and school wrong

Liberal Leader Mark Carney made a significant blunder during a campaign stop in Musquodoboit Harbour in the Nova Scotia riding of Central Nova. He mistakenly referred to Liberal candidate Nathalie Provost as Nathalie Pronovost and also named the wrong university as the site of the 1989 Montreal massacre. Carney incorrectly stated that the shootings took place at Concordia, when in fact they occurred at Polytechnique, the engineering school at the Université de Montréal.

Carney quickly apologized to Provost for his errors, but Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet was quick to capitalize on the mistakes. Blanchet criticized Carney for his lack of knowledge about such a significant event in Quebec’s history. He also took to social media to highlight the incident and emphasize the Bloc’s long-standing support for Provost’s efforts to advocate for stronger gun control laws.

Nathalie Provost, a survivor of the Polytechnique shooting, is running as the Liberal candidate for Châteauguay-Les Jardins-de-Napierville in Quebec. Alongside fellow survivor Heidi Rathjen, Provost has been a vocal advocate for gun control measures in Canada. Both survivors were recognized for their advocacy work by PolySeSouvient, a group dedicated to remembering the victims of the massacre.

Provost, who was shot four times during the Polytechnique shooting, expressed understanding for Carney’s name mistake but emphasized the importance of accurately acknowledging the tragic events that took place. She clarified that Carney’s remarks did capture the essence of her commitment to gun control advocacy as a survivor of gun violence.

In an interview with CBC News, Provost highlighted her proactive decision to approach the Liberal Party about running as a candidate. Despite the initial mix-up, Provost remains focused on her campaign and her dedication to advocating for policies that prevent future tragedies like the Polytechnique massacre.
