Carney laments Pride ‘backlash’ and rolls out money to make 2SLGBTQ+ parades safer

Prime Minister Mark Carney Raises Pride Flag on Parliament Hill

Prime Minister Mark Carney kicked off a month-long celebration of sexual and gender diversity by raising a Pride flag on Parliament Hill. Addressing a crowd of MPs, senators, political staffers, and community activists, Carney highlighted the progress made in the fight for equal rights for the 2SLGBTQ+ community. However, he also warned of a growing backlash against these advancements and emphasized the need for federal support to ensure the safety of Pride parades this year.

Carney stated that Canada is a country that recognizes and defends the rights of individuals to be who they want to be and love who they want to love. He acknowledged the global backlash against LGBTQ rights and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to standing up for the vulnerable and promoting equality.

Statistics Canada data revealed a significant increase in hate crimes targeting sexual orientation, with a 69% spike in police-reported incidents in 2023. These crimes were most likely to occur during Pride month, underscoring the need for increased safety measures at LGBTQ events. In response, the federal government allocated $1.5 million to Fierté Canada Pride to enhance security and insurance for Pride festivals nationwide.

Amid efforts in some countries, like the U.S., to restrict trans rights, Carney pledged that Canada would continue to advocate for LGBTQ rights globally. He expressed support for the community in the face of discriminatory policies and actions.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when Pride organizations, such as Pride Toronto, are facing challenges. Corporate sponsors, including major U.S. companies like Google and Home Depot, have withdrawn their support, possibly due to concerns about losing U.S. government backing. Pride Toronto has also faced scrutiny over the use of federal funding and past controversial statements.

As Canada celebrates Pride Month and reaffirms its commitment to LGBTQ rights, Carney’s message serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and the importance of supporting and protecting the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
