Law graduate Leticia Paul dies at 22 after routine CT scan

A tragic incident occurred at Alto Vale Regional Hospital in Rio do Sul, where a young and promising Brazilian lawyer, Leticia Paul, lost her life due to a severe allergic reaction during a routine CT scan.
Paul, who was only 22 years old, suffered an anaphylactic shock during a contrast-enhanced CT scan, triggered by the contrast dye injected before the procedure.
Despite being rushed to the hospital immediately, Paul sadly passed away less than 24 hours after the scan.
Anaphylactic shock is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can lead to airway constriction, throat swelling, a sudden drop in blood pressure, and other severe symptoms, requiring urgent medical attention to prevent fatal outcomes.
According to reports, Paul was undergoing a routine checkup for kidney stones when the tragic incident occurred.
She was a recent graduate of Colégio Sinodal Ruy Barbosa’s law program and was pursuing postgraduate studies in Law and Real Estate.
The school expressed solidarity with Paul’s family and friends, offering comfort and strength during this difficult time.
Alto Vale Regional Hospital also released a statement expressing regret over the loss and extending solidarity to the grieving family.

The hospital emphasized its commitment to ethics, transparency, and patient safety, assuring that all procedures were followed according to recommended clinical protocols.
Contrast dyes are commonly used during imaging scans to enhance the visibility of organs and tissues, with iodinated contrast being injected into a vein. While such dyes are generally safe, severe reactions occur in only a small percentage of patients.
Most individuals experience minor side effects like warmth, nausea, or itching post-injection, with life-threatening reactions being rare.
