In a stunning move, Dr. Daskalakis used his resignation letter to call out the Trump administration for its alleged attempts to “erase transgender populations.” His decision to include “he/his/him” pronouns after his name has sparked controversy and debate.

“I am writing to formally resign from my position as Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, effective August 28, 2025,” Dr. Daskalakis stated in his resignation letter posted on X.

Accusing the administration of recklessness, Dr. Daskalakis emphasized his long-standing commitment to advocating for LGBTQ health issues. He expressed concerns about the administration’s decisions to cut HIV programming and research that supports equity.

The use of the term “pregnant people” in Dr. Daskalakis’ resignation letter has drawn strong reactions from critics.

“This resignation is a victory for the Trump administration and the American people. The CDC should prioritize scientific accuracy and basic biology,” said Jeremy Redfern, communications director for Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also weighed in, stating, “Embracing evidence-based medicine should be the bare minimum for working at the CDC.”

Dr. Daskalakis warned that the Department of Health and Human Services is on a “dangerous” path that could jeopardize public health and national security.
