Cement truck driver suffers minor injuries when vehicle plunges over Kings County embankment onto beach

The driver of a cement truck was injured when the vehicle careened off the road, over an embankment and onto the shore of the Bay of Fundy on Thursday.

The truck was driving down Long Point Road in Ogilvie, about two kilometres west of Harbourville, when it failed to make a sharp bend over Turner Brook at about lunchtime.

The vehicle went through a guard rail and crashed over rocks, crushing the cab over the driver’s seat before it came to rest on its wheels on the beach below. The drum on the back of the truck was ripped from the vehicle.

Berwick firefighters were called to the scene and then called for a hazardous materials team comprised of three other Kings County departments to deal with diesel leaking from a fuel tank.

The federal and provincial Departments of Environment were also called.

The truck was later lifted up over the rock embankment.

“Basically, between the weight of the vehicle and the downhill grade, he failed to negotiate the bend and goes down over the embankment,” RCMP spokesman Cpl. Chris Marshall said Friday. “The driver was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.”

The crash is still under investigation.
