Senate committee subpoenas Massport over migrants at Boston airport

Sen. Ted Cruz, the chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, is taking a strong stance against the sheltering of migrants at Boston Logan International Airport, calling the practice “reckless and offensive.” The Texas Republican is now subpoenaing the Massachusetts Port Authority for documents related to this issue that were requested by Republicans on the committee last year.

Cruz stated that a full investigation into this scandal is necessary to prevent its future reemergence and to hold those complicit in Biden’s lawless immigration orders accountable. He emphasized the importance of stopping Biden’s open border policy, which was halted by former President Donald Trump.

Last year, lawmakers raised concerns about the use of facilities at Logan Airport to house migrants, citing obligations related to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants. They argued that allowing migrants to shelter at the airport violated the conditions of the funding received. Migrants were reportedly camped out on a daily basis in Terminal E at the airport during the height of the migrant crisis.

Massport, the port authority, had received FAA grants and lawmakers wanted to know how many migrants were housed at the airport, the related costs, the impact on capacity, screening information, and how the port authority was reimbursed. However, the committee did not receive a response to their inquiries.

As a result, the Senate Commerce Committee is now issuing a subpoena for documents and communications related to the housing of illegal immigrants at Logan Airport. They will be seeking information on communications with government agencies, nonprofits, healthcare providers, security incidents involving migrants, and individuals involved in providing shelter.

Cruz highlighted that Massport violated FAA grant requirements by using the airport as housing for illegal aliens. He criticized Massport for refusing to provide information to the committee, including details on potential security incidents. As chairman of the committee overseeing civil aviation and aviation security, Cruz intends to compel Massport to turn over the requested information through the subpoena.

The Trump administration’s aggressive approach to cracking down on illegal immigration has been cited as a backdrop to this investigation. Interior enforcement has increased, particularly in sanctuary cities like Boston, while measures have been taken to limit the release of migrants into the interior. The administration has deployed the military to the border and ended the Biden-era use of humanitarian parole for releasing migrants.

Overall, the Trump administration’s policies have led to a rise in interior arrests and a sharp drop in border crossings. These developments are seen as a result of the administration’s new approach to immigration enforcement.

In conclusion, Sen. Ted Cruz’s efforts to investigate the sheltering of migrants at Boston Logan International Airport reflect a broader push to address immigration issues and hold accountable those involved in facilitating illegal immigration. The subpoena for documents from the Massachusetts Port Authority underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in immigration policies.
