Coast Guard slashes nearly $33M by eliminating ‘ineffective’ program

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has successfully assisted the U.S. Coast Guard in saving a significant amount of $32.7 million by eliminating an ineffective IT program called the Logistics Information Management System (CG-LIMS). This achievement was confirmed by the Department of Homeland Security in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, praising the Coast Guard for taking the necessary steps to enhance government efficiency. By terminating the CG-LIMS program, the Coast Guard can now redirect its resources towards more critical areas that are essential for safeguarding the homeland.

Initially scheduled to become operational in 2027 and achieve full capability by 2031, the CG-LIMS was designed to integrate existing and future capabilities within the Coast Guard while supporting its operations. The program aimed to modernize the Coast Guard’s IT systems, leading to increased capabilities and resources, as well as substantial cost savings and improved logistics integration across services.

However, due to its inability to meet the required specifications in the near future, all activities related to the CG-LIMS program will cease by May 1, 2025. The $32.7 million saved from this termination will be reallocated to address emergent needs within the Coast Guard, with personnel originally assigned to the CG-LIMS program being reassigned to fill critical personnel shortages.

Moving forward, the Coast Guard will continue exploring alternative solutions to address IT logistics gaps and achieve the desired functionality envisioned for the Service. Rear Adm. Mike Campbell, the Coast Guard’s director of acquisition programs and program executive officer, emphasized the organization’s commitment to maximizing efficiency, identifying cost savings, and optimizing returns on investments in the Coast Guard under the Force Design 2028 (FD 2028) initiative.

FD 2028 focuses on enhancing various aspects, including people, organization, contracting, acquisition, and technology within the Coast Guard. Described as a “once-in-a-generation” effort, FD 2028 aims to transform the Coast Guard to adapt to the current and future operational environment effectively.

In conclusion, the successful elimination of the CG-LIMS program highlights the Coast Guard’s dedication to efficient resource management and operational effectiveness. By leveraging the expertise of DOGE and implementing strategic decisions, the Coast Guard remains committed to fulfilling its mission of protecting the homeland and securing maritime approaches.
