Common painkiller could cause medical complications in people over 65: study

New research has raised concerns about the safety of acetaminophen, a common medication that is often used as a pain reliever and fever reducer. The study, published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research, focused on the safety of acetaminophen in older individuals.
The study, which analyzed data from over 180,000 acetaminophen users and 400,000 non-users, found that the use of acetaminophen was associated with an increased risk of serious medical complications. These complications included peptic ulcer bleeding, uncomplicated peptic ulcers, lower gastrointestinal bleeding, heart failure, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease.
Lead study author Professor Weiya Zhang emphasized the need for caution when using acetaminophen long-term, especially in older individuals who may be at higher risk of experiencing drug-related complications. While acetaminophen is often recommended as a first-line treatment for conditions like osteoarthritis, the study suggests that its minimal pain-relief effect should be carefully considered.
Dr. Marc Siegel, a clinical professor of medicine, noted that the study challenges the long-held belief that acetaminophen is safe for everyone. He pointed out that acetaminophen may modulate pathways that can increase adverse gastrointestinal side effects, similar to anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen.
The study, while observational in nature, highlights the importance of considering the potential side effects of over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen. Older adults, in particular, may be more susceptible to these side effects due to changes in their bodies as they age.
Gerontologist Dr. Macie P. Smith emphasized the need for older adults to consult with their healthcare providers before taking any medications, including over-the-counter drugs like acetaminophen. She recommended using only one pharmacy to keep track of all medications and consulting with a pharmacist to check for potential interactions.
Overall, the study underscores the importance of being informed and cautious when it comes to medication use, especially for older individuals. It’s essential to weigh the risks and benefits of any medication and to seek guidance from healthcare professionals to ensure safety and optimal health.
