Cubs star commits baserunning gaffe in win over Cardinals

Ian Happ, a MLB outfielder for the Chicago Cubs, had a moment he would like to forget during a recent game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs ultimately celebrated a 3-0 victory over their NL Central division rivals, but Happ’s mistake in the first inning was a highlight of the game.
Happ stepped up to the plate to lead off the game and hit a single to left field. A few batters later, Cubs right fielder Seiya Suzuki hit a fly ball to right field. Happ, eager to advance, sprinted from first base almost immediately after Suzuki made contact with the ball.
However, Cardinals outfielder Alec Burleson made the catch, forcing Happ to retreat back to first base. In the midst of his haste, Happ missed a crucial step – he failed to retouch second base on his way back to first. Despite making it back to first base before the ball reached the Cardinals first baseman, Happ was ultimately ruled out for the mistake.
The double play ended the inning, and the Cubs went on to secure the win. Happ, a three-time Gold Glove winner, is in his ninth season with the Cubs.
This blunder by Happ serves as a reminder of the importance of attention to detail and following the fundamental rules of the game. Even seasoned players can make errors, but it’s how they learn from them and move forward that truly matters in the world of sports.
