DeSantis threatens to veto immigration bill passed by GOP lawmakers

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made it clear on Wednesday that he is prepared to veto a Republican-sponsored immigration bill that he believes would weaken enforcement against illegal immigration. DeSantis, who has been at odds with state Republican lawmakers, expressed his disappointment with the bill that narrowly passed the Florida legislature, calling it a watered-down version that fails to meet the state’s need for strong immigration enforcement.

In a statement, DeSantis emphasized the importance of having the strongest immigration enforcement laws in the nation and criticized the bill for falling short of fulfilling the promises made to voters. He highlighted the need for legislation that would enhance state and local deportation efforts, put an end to catch and release policies, eliminate incentives for illegal immigrants such as remittances, and implement measures to safeguard Floridians from the impacts of illegal immigration.

The governor’s threat to veto the bill came amidst a special session called by DeSantis to address proposals related to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Instead of focusing on the governor’s agenda, state lawmakers passed other immigration bills and even overturned a budget veto issued by DeSantis, marking the first time in 15 years that the Florida legislature has overridden a governor’s veto.

One of the bills passed by lawmakers was the Tackling and Reforming Unlawful Migration Policy Act, also known as the TRUMP Act. However, DeSantis criticized the bill for being insufficient in its efforts to arrest and deport illegal immigrants, particularly those with criminal records. The governor made it clear that the veto pen was ready and emphasized the need for stronger measures to address illegal immigration in the state.

As the debate over immigration enforcement continues in Florida, Governor DeSantis remains committed to ensuring that the state’s laws reflect a tough stance on illegal immigration. His stance has garnered praise from former President Donald Trump, who has expressed support for DeSantis’s efforts to uphold strict immigration policies. The governor’s determination to veto the immigration bill underscores his commitment to protecting the interests of Floridians and upholding the rule of law in the state.
