Double homicide suspect found dead near Calgary after police issued emergency alert

A dangerous person alert that was issued for Calgary and surrounding areas on Monday has been cancelled after police found the suspect of a double homicide over the weekend dead northwest of the city. Calgary police had issued an emergency alert for Benedict Kaminski, 38, describing him as armed and dangerous. However, tips from the public led officers to the Water Valley area, approximately 60 kilometres northwest of Calgary, where Kaminski was found dead near his vehicle.

Officials have stated that they are no longer searching for a suspect in connection with the deaths of a father and daughter on Sunday, and no further information is currently available. The dangerous person alert was issued following the discovery of the bodies of a man in his 70s and a woman in her 30s at two separate locations on Sunday.

Initially, police had indicated that the public was not at risk as the deaths appeared to be targeted and domestic in nature. However, Inspector Lee Wayne explained the decision to issue the alert, stating, “We don’t want anyone to interact with this individual.” He emphasized the importance of assessing risks throughout an investigation and alerting the public when sudden behaviors or concerns arise.

Wayne also revealed that the victims are believed to be Kaminski’s wife and her father. Kaminski, who was not known to police and had no prior criminal convictions, was a licensed gun owner with access to firearms. The exact cause of death for the victims has not been disclosed, but autopsies are scheduled for Friday.

The timeline of the killings remains unclear, but other family members have been confirmed as safe and are receiving support. The cancellation of the dangerous person alert brings some relief to the community, as the suspect has been located and is no longer a threat.
