Canadian Freestyle Skier Mikaël Kingsbury Wins Gold in Almaty World Cup Event

Canadian freestyle skiing star Mikaël Kingsbury added another gold medal to his impressive collection at a World Cup moguls event in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Friday.

Despite the cancellation of the men’s final due to poor visibility, Kingsbury dominated the qualifying runs with a top score of 81.17, securing his seventh World Cup victory of the season.

Daeyoon Jung of South Korea claimed the silver medal with a score of 79.08, while Ikuma Horishima from Japan took home the bronze with a score of 77.82.

With this win, Kingsbury now boasts an impressive total of 10 medals (seven golds, three silvers) in 13 World Cup events this season.

The Canadian skier is currently leading the race for the Crystal Globes in all three season-long World Cup moguls standings – moguls, dual moguls, and overall. His closest competitor, Ikuma Horishima, trails behind by 176 points in moguls, 64 points in dual moguls, and 240 points in the overall standings.

On the women’s side, the final was able to be completed before visibility deteriorated. American skiers Tess Johnson and Jaelin Kauf secured a 1-2 finish in Almaty, with Rina Yanagimoto from Japan claiming the bronze.

Saskatoon’s Maia Schwinghammer finished in 11th place and currently holds the third spot in the overall moguls standings.

The World Cup moguls circuit will continue with the dual moguls event on Saturday. Fans can catch live coverage of the events on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem, with a live streaming schedule available here.
