Early childhood education students say NSCC Africentric program has changed their lives
Students in the Africentric early childhood education program at Nova Scotia Community College recently came together to celebrate the culmination of their two-year journey. The program, designed to inspire more Black students to pursue careers in early childhood education, provides a unique perspective through the lens of the African Nova Scotian community, emphasizing culturally responsive care.
The festivities kicked off with a student-led ceremony featuring drumming, music, and heartfelt speeches. Attendees had the opportunity to admire the impressive artwork and coursework created by the students throughout the program. Araba Pittet, one of the participants, described the experience as the best of her life, highlighting the strong relationships formed and the invaluable skills acquired during her time in the program.
Growing up surrounded by children, Pittet always felt drawn to working with them, making a career in early childhood education a natural choice. Another student, Lariah Jordan, expressed how being part of the Africentric program had been life-changing, opening up new career opportunities and fostering a sense of self-discovery and confidence.
As the second cohort of the program prepares to graduate in June, faculty lead Justin West emphasized the significance of the program in fostering a sense of community and celebrating Black identity. Beyond increasing representation in childcare centers, West envisions program graduates taking on leadership roles in policy-making and other areas, ultimately shaping the future of early childhood education.
The spirit of Ubuntu, meaning community togetherness, was evident throughout the ceremony, reflecting the program’s commitment to empowering Black students and promoting inclusivity. Through initiatives like the Africentric early childhood education program, institutions like Nova Scotia Community College are not only diversifying the field of early childhood education but also nurturing future leaders who will continue to inspire and uplift their communities.
