Escaped pet zebra reunited with owner after 8-day search in Tennessee

An escaped zebra in Tennessee has been safely reunited with its owner after an eight-day search across the county. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office announced the successful rescue of “celebrity Zebra Ed” in a Facebook post on Sunday.

According to officials, the zebra, named “Zebra Ed,” was found near Interstate 24 in a pasture near the Buchanan Estates subdivision. Video footage of the rescue shows the zebra being lifted by a helicopter out of a wooded area.

Zebra Ed originally arrived in Christiana on May 30 and was reported missing one day later by its owner. The sheriff’s office did not provide details on how or where the zebra was obtained by its owners, or where it was being housed at the time of its escape.

Deputies located the zebra near the interstate, where it had caused chaos by running along the highway. The zebra was eventually spotted by Deputy Ryan Keach, who closed down one lane of traffic to ensure the safety of travelers.

After crossing the interstate, both eastbound and westbound lanes were closed by deputies. Despite being missing for several days, Zebra Ed was eventually spotted again on Friday, June 6, in a field near Ridgewood Drive in Christiana.

The sheriff’s office announced that they were working with a veterinarian to safely rescue the zebra, using a drone camera to monitor the animal. They emphasized the importance of not scaring the zebra in order to successfully calm it down.

As of now, the sheriff’s office has not disclosed the zebra’s future plans. The rescue operation was a joint effort by law enforcement officials and wildlife experts, ensuring the safe return of Zebra Ed to its owner.
