Russia may deploy former general who blasted military leadership

A Russian general who was once sidelined and accused of fraud after criticizing the nation’s Ministry of Defense may soon be reinstated to the front lines of the war in Ukraine. General Major Ivan Popov, who previously commanded Russia’s 58th Army, has been recommended for deployment to Ukraine by his lawyer and the Ministry of Defense.
Popov had been detained in 2023 following his public criticism of Russian military leadership. However, his lawyer, Sergei Buinovsky, revealed that there is a motion to suspend his case and send him to Ukraine. This decision comes after Popov published an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, requesting to be reinstated to military service in order to halt his criminal trial.
It is believed that Putin may intervene in the case to ensure Popov is deployed to Ukraine. Rebekah Koffler, a former defense intelligence officer and author, stated that Putin often involves himself in high-profile cases, especially when Western media is involved. She added that the Russian president may view sending Popov to Ukraine as an opportunity for propaganda, showcasing Popov’s willingness to serve the “Russian motherland.”
The assignment to lead a penal detachment, which is known for conducting near-suicidal missions, is considered a death sentence. These forces have suffered significant casualties in the ongoing war against Ukraine. Popov, however, expressed his desire to continue fighting the enemy and fulfill his oath as a military officer.
As the former commander of Russia’s 58th Army, Popov had successfully repelled a Ukrainian counter-attack that relied on NATO-supplied tanks. He had criticized Russia’s top commanders for allowing Ukraine’s initial breakthrough, leading to his reassignment to Syria before facing fraud charges.
Despite the challenges he has faced, Popov remains grateful for the trust placed in him by President Putin. He is prepared to lead a smaller detachment in Ukraine, showcasing his determination to serve his country. The decision to reinstate Popov to the front lines of the war reflects the complexities and uncertainties of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
