What to know for a big week in golf

The Buzzer: Golf tournaments galore!
A pair of exciting golf tournaments are set to kick off on Thursday, with the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs coming to a head at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, and the LPGA’s Canadian Women’s Open attracting some of the biggest stars in the sport to the Toronto area. Here’s a closer look at both events:
Canadian Women’s Open
The CPKC Women’s Open, the only Canadian stop on the LPGA Tour, is making history this year by taking place at the Mississauga Golf and Country Club for the first time in the tournament’s 52-year history. The field of 156 players includes top-ranked golfers from around the world, with 19 of the 22 LPGA Tour winners from this season in the mix.
Leading the pack is world No.1 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand, who is back in action after claiming the top spot following the women’s British Open. Third-ranked Lydia Ko of New Zealand is also a player to watch, as she aims for her fourth Canadian Women’s Open title. Meanwhile, 21-year-old British sensation Lottie Woad, who recently turned pro and already has an LPGA Tour title to her name, is the favourite to win the tournament.
Sixteen Canadians will be competing in the event, including fan-favourite Brooke Henderson, who holds the record for the most career titles by a Canadian on a major tour. Despite a recent drought in victories, Henderson remains a force to be reckoned with on the course.
Tour Championship
The PGA Tour’s season finale at East Lake in Atlanta promises a massive payout, with a total of $40 million up for grabs among the 30 players in the FedEx Cup playoffs. The winner will walk away with a staggering $10 million, making it one of the richest prizes in golf.
Canadian golfers Corey Conners and Nick Taylor will be looking to make their mark at the Tour Championship after securing their spots in the field. With the starting strokes format scrapped this year, all players will begin on equal footing, setting the stage for an exciting and unpredictable competition.
Scottie Scheffler, the current favourite to win the FedEx Cup, will be aiming to add another title to his impressive season tally. With multiple victories under his belt, Scheffler is poised to join the elite ranks of players who have won multiple FedEx Cups.
Don’t miss out on the action as these golf tournaments promise plenty of excitement and drama on the course. Stay tuned for more updates on The Buzzer!
