FAA temporarily restricts drone flights in New York in response to sightings

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implemented additional restrictions on drone flights in the Northeast region in response to a surge in sightings in recent weeks. Following the announcement of temporary restrictions on drone flights in New Jersey, the FAA has now issued 27 No-Fly Zone notices for “special security reasons” in New York.

These restrictions are set to remain in place until January 18, 2025, and cover some of the most densely populated areas in New York, including almost every borough of New York City. The aim of these restrictions is to enhance safety and security in the region.

There are some exceptions to the restrictions, including allowances for drones used in support of national defense, homeland security, law enforcement, firefighting, rescue services, and disaster response. Commercial drones may also operate within restricted airspace with a valid statement of work.

Individuals falling under these categories must obtain an approved Special Government Interest waiver from the FAA. This waiver serves as an emergency authorization that permits operations in restricted airspace for specific purposes. It is crucial for all drone operators to adhere to federal aviation regulations to ensure compliance with the restrictions.

The FAA’s decision to impose these restrictions comes in response to a significant increase in reported drone sightings across the Northeast. Many of these sightings have been concentrated in New Jersey, occurring on a nightly basis, leading to bipartisan concerns from both citizens and lawmakers.

An ongoing joint investigation by the FBI, FAA, Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Defense has revealed nearly 5,000 reports of alleged drone sightings in the past few weeks. While only a fraction of these reports have led to actionable leads, the agencies continue to monitor the situation closely.

Despite finding no imminent threat during their investigation, the agencies have called on Congress to enact legislation that would bolster existing counter-drone authorities to effectively identify and mitigate any potential threats that may arise.

As of now, no other states have issued similar notices in response to the surge in drone sightings across the Northeast. The FAA’s proactive measures aim to safeguard the airspace and ensure the safety of residents in the region.
