Faint hope when noise was detected searching for submarine near Titanic wreckage, time running out

HALIFAX — There is a glimmer of hope in the search for a missing submarine near the Titanic wreck in the Atlantic Ocean south of Newfoundland after an underwater noise was detected overnight.

The U.S. Coast Guard says a Canadian military patrol plane picked up the sound, but adds it’s unclear what that could mean.

In a tweet, the Coast Guard said three ships arrived at the scene today, including the Canadian Coast Guard vessel John Cabot, which has side-scanning sonar.

Time is running out for the five people aboard the Titan, with an estimated less than a day’s air supply on the 6.4-meter ship.

The Coast Guard says an underwater robot has been moved to the area where the noise was heard, but initial searches turned up negative results.

The submarine lost contact with its launch ship Polar Prince during its descent on Sunday in a remote area of the ocean about 700 miles south of St. John’s.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on June 21, 2023.
