FBI, CISA say Chinese hackers breached telecom providers in targeted attack

The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have issued a warning that hackers from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have successfully breached commercial telecommunication service providers in the United States. This breach has raised concerns about potential cyber espionage activities targeting the country’s infrastructure.

According to a joint release by the agencies, the affected entities have been alerted about the security breach, and efforts are being made to inform other potential targets of the heightened cyber activity. The investigation into the PRC’s targeting of commercial telecommunications infrastructure has revealed a widespread and significant cyber espionage campaign.

The agencies have identified PRC-affiliated actors who have compromised networks at multiple telecommunications companies to steal customer call record data and private communications of a limited number of individuals primarily involved in government or political activities. Additionally, these hackers have copied specific information that was subject to U.S. law enforcement requests under court orders.

As the investigation continues, the agencies anticipate gaining a deeper understanding of these compromises. They are actively working to enhance cyber defenses and are encouraging organizations that suspect they may have been impacted to contact their local FBI field office or CISA for assistance.

This recent revelation of Chinese cyber interference follows previous incidents where hackers targeted the campaigns of President-elect Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris during the presidential race. In response to specific malicious activities targeting the sector, the FBI and CISA promptly notified affected companies, provided technical assistance, and shared information to assist potential victims.

The FBI and CISA are committed to providing technical support, sharing information rapidly, and strengthening cyber defenses across the commercial communications sector. Organizations that believe they may have been victims of cyber attacks are urged to engage with their local FBI Field Office or CISA for assistance.
