FBI issues warning to leagues about crime organizations targeting pro athletes’ homes for burglaries

FBI Warns Sports Leagues of Crime Organizations Targeting Professional Athletes
The FBI has issued a warning to sports leagues about crime organizations targeting professional athletes, following a series of burglaries at the homes of prominent NFL and NBA players. According to a Liaison Information Report obtained by ABC News, athletes’ homes are being targeted because they are perceived to contain high-end goods such as designer handbags, jewelry, watches, and cash.
Both the NFL and NBA have already sent out security alerts to their players in response to the break-ins, some of which occurred while players were away with their teams for road games. The NFL’s alert stated that homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have been “increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups.”
One of the latest victims is Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks, whose home was recently burglarized. Doncic’s business manager, Lara Beth Seager, confirmed the break-in and stated that nobody was home at the time of the incident. Doncic has since filed a police report regarding the burglary.
Other notable athletes who have fallen victim to these organized theft groups include NFL quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow, as well as tight end Travis Kelce from the Kansas City Chiefs. NBA players Bobby Portis of the Milwaukee Bucks and Mike Conley Jr. of the Minnesota Timberwolves have also been targeted.
According to the FBI report, these organized theft groups from South America use publicly available information and social media to identify athletes’ habits and track their movements. These groups utilize advanced technology to bypass alarm systems, block wireless internet connections, disable devices, cover security cameras, and conceal their identities.
Athletes are advised to report any suspicious activity, keep detailed records of their valuables and their locations, increase security measures, and exercise caution on social media. The FBI also recommends that athletes refrain from posting pictures of their valuables, interior of their homes, and real-time updates while on vacation.
It is crucial for professional athletes to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their belongings from these sophisticated crime organizations.
