Federal probe into police helicopter used on teens during Senior Cut Day

The Nassau County Police Department is currently under investigation by federal officials after officers utilized a helicopter in an attempt to disperse a group of approximately 500 teenagers at Jones Beach for “Senior Cut Day.”
The incident unfolded on Thursday when a flyer circulated on social media, drawing a large crowd of teens to Jones Beach in Wantagh, New York. Witnesses described the situation quickly escalating once the teenagers arrived, prompting law enforcement to intervene.
A Nassau County Police Department helicopter was deployed to hover over the group of teens, causing sand to be lifted into the air. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that they are looking into the use of the helicopter in this particular situation.
According to FAA regulations, helicopters are prohibited from flying below 1,000 feet “above the highest obstacle” unless necessary for takeoff or landing. The agency is investigating whether the police department’s actions adhered to these guidelines.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman defended the police’s response, stating that their actions prevented further harm. He emphasized that the helicopter played a crucial role in dispersing the unruly crowd, ultimately ensuring the safety of those present.
Police and other officials implemented measures to restrict access to certain areas of the beach in an effort to prevent any additional violence. Despite the chaotic scene, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
The community has been left shaken by the events that transpired at Jones Beach. One witness reflected on the drastic change in atmosphere, remarking, “The beach was never like this. We came here as kids—it was so calm. But now it’s just crazy.”
Authorities made one arrest in connection with the disturbances that took place on “Senior Cut Day” at Jones Beach. The investigation into the incident continues as officials work to ensure the safety and security of all individuals involved.
