‘Feels like my mom was in the building’: For this Moosehead, Fight Cancer Night is personal

Braeden MacPhee continues to honour his late mom, Jolene Conway, on the Halifax Mooseheads’ annual Fight Cancer Night for the second consecutive season. Conway passed away in April 2023 at the age of 46 after battling cancer. The 20-year-old forward from Moncton, N.B., scored the first goal for his team in a 2-1 comeback win against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Saturday night.

Reflecting on his goal, MacPhee expressed that it brought a sense of relief and felt like his mom was present in the arena with him. This emotional moment marked the second consecutive year that MacPhee scored during the Fight Cancer Night game. The event aims to raise funds and awareness for all types of cancer, with players donning purple jerseys that are later auctioned off.

Joining the Mooseheads last month in a trade, goalie Jacob Steinman highlighted the significance of the game to MacPhee. Despite a slow start for the team, MacPhee’s goal in the second period ignited a comeback that led to victory. The forward was named the first star of the game, receiving a heartfelt ovation from the crowd of 8,300 in attendance.

MacPhee’s mother had only revealed her cancer diagnosis to him and his younger brother a couple of months before her passing, emphasizing the importance of focusing on sports. Her obituary praised her dedication to her children’s sporting endeavors, describing her as kind-hearted and always willing to lend a helping hand. MacPhee fondly remembers his mother’s positive outlook on life and infectious smile, which deeply impacted those around her.

Despite the void left by his mother’s absence, MacPhee remains determined to persevere and pursue his dreams, as per her encouragement to always look on the bright side of things. The young forward is committed to honoring his mother’s memory by working hard and staying resilient in the face of challenges, embodying the values instilled in him by Jolene Conway.
