Fit grandfather shocked by diagnosis reverses pre-diabetes through diet changes

A 66-year-old grandfather from Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, was shocked to discover he was pre-diabetic after a routine blood test. Will McKechnie, a dance teacher who exercised daily and considered himself healthy, was taken aback by the news. Despite his active lifestyle and regular exercise routine, his average blood sugar level was 6.2%, indicating pre-diabetes.

McKechnie was determined to reverse his pre-diabetic condition and made significant changes to his diet and eating habits. He cut out his nightly chocolate and chips snacks and replaced them with whole, nutritious foods. He also started chewing his food more slowly, taking 40 minutes to eat a wholemeal chicken sandwich for lunch. By focusing on mindful food choices and slower eating, McKechnie was able to shed nearly 27 pounds, bringing his weight down to 142 pounds and a size small shirt.

His breakfast now consists of fruit, and his dinners include boiled eggs, roasted peanuts, celery, cherry tomatoes, carrots, and cucumber. By making these changes, McKechnie was able to lower his blood sugar level to 5.9% within nine months. He no longer battles sugar cravings and feels stronger than ever, with “enormous amounts of energy.”

McKechnie, who quit smoking in 1986 and stopped drinking in 2012, emphasizes the importance of routine health checks. He believes that everyone should be proactive about monitoring their health, even if they appear healthy on the outside. McKechnie encourages others to get their blood sugar checked regularly, as early detection can lead to positive lifestyle changes and improved health outcomes.
