Florida news: Grinch gives speeding drivers a lesson

Florida Keys “Grinch Cop” Encourages Safe Driving in School Zones

Drivers in the Florida Keys are getting a unique reminder to follow speed limits and stay off cellphones in school zones, courtesy of an officer known as the “Grinch cop.” Col. Lou Caputo, dressed as the famous green character from Dr. Seuss’ book, is using a creative approach to catch drivers who are being naughty on the road.

In a video posted by the Florida Keys and Key West tourism board, Officer Grinch can be seen working with other deputies to monitor drivers in school zones in Key Largo. When confronting a driver who was allegedly misbehaving, Officer Grinch gave him a surprising choice: a citation or an onion.

The driver, taken aback by the unconventional offer, ultimately chose the onion with a smile. Officer Grinch explained that the intention behind the choice was to raise awareness about safe driving in school zones, especially during the holiday season.

Col. Caputo, who started the Officer Grinch program over 20 years ago, aimed to add humor to the serious issue of speeding in school zones. Inspired by Jim Carrey’s onion-loving portrayal of the Grinch in the movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” the choice between a ticket and an onion has proven to be a hit among drivers.

While the approach may be lighthearted, Caputo emphasized that police still conduct necessary checks on vehicles and drivers before offering the unusual choice. He joked that in his experience, all drivers have opted for the onion, considering its versatility for various uses.

The Officer Grinch initiative serves as a creative way to remind drivers to prioritize safety in school zones and ensure the well-being of students during their commute. By combining humor with enforcement, Col. Caputo hopes to make a lasting impact on driver behavior in the Florida Keys.
