Alex MacDonnell, the executive director of Stepping Stone in Nova Scotia, understands the challenges faced by individuals who lack access to digital resources. For many of their clients, a phone is no longer a luxury but a necessity for safety and communication. Missing out on job interviews, medical appointments, or court appearances due to a lack of connectivity can have serious consequences.

Fortunately, organizations like GEO Nova Scotia are working to bridge the digital divide by providing devices, internet access, and digital literacy training to Nova Scotians. Matt Spurway, the executive director of GEO, emphasizes the importance of digital inclusion in today’s society. Without access to the internet and basic digital skills, individuals can become isolated from essential services, education, employment, and information.

In a recent article published in Nature, digital inclusion was referred to as the “Super Social Determinant of Health.” The paper highlights the importance of healthcare systems supporting individuals’ digital needs, as many essential services are now exclusively available online. Access to the internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity for participation in society.

GEO’s efforts have already made a difference in the lives of Stepping Stone’s clients. By providing devices, internet access, and phone plans, they have helped individuals stay connected and access important resources. The addition of phones and phone plans to their program has been particularly beneficial, ensuring that clients do not miss important phone calls due to limited minutes on pay-as-you-go plans.

In 2024, GEO supplied 27 devices and phone plans to Stepping Stone’s clients, demonstrating the impact of digital inclusion initiatives. By empowering individuals with the tools they need to stay connected, organizations like GEO are helping to break down barriers and create opportunities for those who need it most.
