Waterloo Tech Week: A Celebration of Innovation and Community

Waterloo has long been recognized as a tech hub, and now the city is gearing up to showcase the incredible work being done within its borders in a whole new way. From September 8 to 11, Waterloo Tech Week will take over the city with four days of panels, demos, and meetups, culminating in the 12th annual Hack the North event.

Jasmine Jiang, one of the event’s organizers, is excited about the 40 events planned throughout the week. “We want to create an opportunity for the entire community to come together, connect with new people, and explore topics they may not have had access to before,” Jiang explained. “There are so many amazing things happening in Waterloo, and it’s time to shine a spotlight on them.”

The lineup for Waterloo Tech Week is diverse and engaging, with talks covering a wide range of topics. From speed friending with tech to discussions on the future of software engineering in the age of AI, there is something for everyone. One standout event is the Bitcoin fireside chat featuring the chief technology officer of Atomic Finance, sponsored by the Wilfrid Laurier Bitcoin Club. This event promises to delve into technical Bitcoin topics and provide valuable insights for those interested in the field.

In addition to the talks, Waterloo Tech Week will feature a city-wide treasure hunt, a “brewed connections” happy hour, a chess bot tournament, a start-up competition, and a student entrepreneur networking lunch. There will also be daily discussions on AI, exploring topics such as the ethics of AI and the evolving role of engineers in shaping AI-generated code.
