France deals Canada 2nd straight loss at Wheelchair Rugby Canada Cup

Canada lost to France, 53-46, on Friday, pushing its record down to 1-2 at the Wheelchair Rugby Canada Cup in Richmond, B.C.

France gained an early lead in the first quarter, not allowing the Canadians to tie the game again in the following three frames. The host team started the second half within reach, down by just three, before France capitalized on Canadian turnovers — pulling away with a seven-point margin of victory to end the game.

The Canadians came into the tournament’s second day following a 58-54 opening win over Australia on Thursday afternoon before losing 53-51 to the United States later in the evening. France was also 1-1 after the first day, beating the United States 53-46 but losing to Australia 52-51 on Thursday.

Canada will play twice on Saturday, taking on Japan at 2 p.m. ET and Great Britain at 8 p.m. to finish the round robin.

Japan is the only remaining undefeated team in the tournament, at 3-0, after wins against Great Britain (47-44) on Thursday, and the U.S. (50-43) and Australia (55-47) on Friday. Great Britain was the only winless team remaining on Friday night before earning its first tournament victory against the Americans, 57-55, in a game that needed two extra periods to decide a winner.

Sunday’s championship games will conclude the tournament, with the gold-medal contest at 7 p.m.
