New top Oversight Democrat sworn in by Kamala Harris as committee chair eyes her testimony

The House Oversight Committee Swears in Rep. Robert Garcia as New Ranking Member

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Robert Garcia, was sworn into his new leadership role earlier this week by former Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris, who previously swore Garcia in as mayor of Long Beach in 2014, reprised that role in a ceremonial swearing-in when Garcia took over his new Oversight role.

Rep. Garcia, a Democrat from California, was elected to serve as ranking member of the committee in June following the death of former ranking member Rep. Gerry Connolly. His swearing-in comes at a crucial time as the committee continues its probe into President Joe Biden and his administration.

Rep. Robert Garcia won an internal House Democratic Caucus vote to become ranking member of House Oversight.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, has not ruled out bringing Harris in before the committee as part of the investigation into whether Biden’s top aides conspired to hide signs of mental decline in the former president.

Comer stated, “I think that it would be helpful to hear from Kamala Harris. If I were her, I would want to set the record straight on a lot of this stuff. Because it’s going to haunt her entire political career.”

The House Oversight Committee’s ranking member traditionally serves as a key player in coordinating the party’s response to investigations led by the panel’s majority. Garcia’s role will be crucial as the committee delves into the Biden probe.

Garcia expressed his gratitude for being sworn in by Harris and stated his commitment to holding the Trump administration accountable for their actions. He emphasized delivering real results for the American people in his new role as ranking member of the House Oversight Committee.

Throughout the ongoing investigation, the committee is considering calling in Harris to testify about the alleged cover-up of Biden’s mental decline. The possibility of subpoenaing Harris remains up in the air, with Republican member Rep. Byron Donalds calling for her testimony.

As Rep. Garcia assumes his new role, he is prepared to navigate the complexities of the Biden probe and uphold the committee’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
