Health Canada is recalling microbial blackberries

Health Canada is recalling a brand of frozen organic blackberries – sold in Ontario and British Columbia – due to possible microbial contamination.
The federal health department said the 365 Whole Food Markets-branded product was initially recalled in another country, prompting an order for Canadians to stop consumption, retail and distribution of the fruit pack due to listeria monocytogenes contaminants.
Listeria monocytogenes is associated with listeriosis, an infection in the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classified as “serious.” Canadians with weaker immune systems, as well as pregnant women and senior citizens, are at particular risk.
While the blackberries may not appear or smell spoiled at first glance, the health risk remains, leading to persistent fever, muscle aches and neck stiffness, among other symptoms in those affected.
Signs of a listeriosis infection appear about two weeks after coming into contact with the bacteria, and if not treated early, they can spread beyond the gut and become an invasive and serious infection.
“Nearly 1 in 20 non-pregnant people with invasive listeriosis die,” said the CDC. Infection can also lead to premature birth or stillbirth.
No illnesses associated with consuming the blackberries from 365 Whole Food Markets have been reported in Canada to date.
Health Canada said recalled products should be thrown away or returned to where they were purchased. The 284 gram package, UPC number 099482406059, was recommended for use on September 16, 2024.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said it is now verifying that the recalled product is being removed from the market as it conducts a food safety investigation that could lead to further product recalls.
