Government agencies concerned Trump inauguration ‘potential target’ for extremists: report
Government agencies are on high alert as President-elect Trump’s inauguration approaches, warning of potential violence from extremists with “election-related grievances.” While no specific threats have been identified, the FBI, Secret Service, and Capitol Police have issued a threat assessment indicating that violent acts could occur during the inauguration.
The report highlights concerns about foreign terrorists, domestic extremists, or lone wolves who may attempt acts of violence such as vehicle-ramming attacks, bomb hoaxes, or swatting calls. Additionally, law enforcement is wary of protests escalating into chaos, particularly since some groups with a history of arrests have applied for demonstration permits.
U.S. Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger emphasized the threat posed by “lone actors” during a recent press conference, citing incidents where individuals attempted to bring weapons or disrupt proceedings at the Capitol. To combat these potential threats, a significant law enforcement presence will be deployed, with approximately 4,000 local officers and 7,800 National Guard soldiers volunteering to assist.
The Secret Service’s Matt McCool assured the public that a comprehensive security plan is in place for the inauguration, involving around 25,000 law enforcement officers. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith also emphasized the right to peaceful protest but warned that violence and unlawful behavior would not be tolerated.
