Ground search for missing Pictou County kids likely to end Sunday

The search for two missing Pictou County siblings, six-year-old Lilly Sullivan and four-year-old Jack Sullivan, is set to conclude on Sunday. The siblings went missing from their home in Lansdowne Station, N.S., on May 2, sparking a massive ground search effort in the sparsely populated area located about 140 kilometres northeast of Halifax.

Initial ground search operations were suspended on May 7, but search and rescue teams resumed their efforts on Saturday. Amy Hansen, one of the search managers overseeing the operation, reported that Saturday’s search was productive. Searchers covered 1.5-square kilometres of previously unexamined areas, focusing on high-probability locations near waterways. Despite their efforts, no significant findings were reported during Saturday’s search.

Hansen indicated that the search is likely to wrap up on Sunday at 8 p.m. AT, pending discussions with the RCMP incident commander. The search teams faced challenges during Saturday’s operation, including obstacles like fallen trees and branches left behind by post-tropical storm Fiona, which hit Nova Scotia in September 2022. Additionally, the dense Nova Scotia woods presented difficulties, with concerns about ticks and even encountering fresh bear prints during the search.

A total of 115 individuals are participating in Sunday’s search efforts, hoping to bring closure to the search for Lilly and Jack Sullivan. The siblings’ stepfather, Daniel Martell, expressed gratitude for the ongoing search efforts, emphasizing the importance of finding the truth and bringing the children home safely.

The community remains hopeful for a positive outcome as the search nears its conclusion, with questions arising about the RCMP’s handling of the case. The search for Lilly and Jack Sullivan has captivated the region, with residents eagerly awaiting news of their safe return home.
