Halifax cab driver charged with Dartmouth assault

A Halifax taxi driver was charged with assault in Dartmouth County Court on Tuesday.

Mearig Fasil Markos, 28, allegedly sexually assaulted a female passenger in Dartmouth in the early morning hours of April 10 after picking her up in Halifax.

The woman filed a police report the next day. Markos was arrested on May 18 and released on a promise to the police.

Attorney Leora Lawson appeared in court on behalf of Markos, who was not present.

Prosecutor Jane Mills said the Crown filed suit against the charges. She said she had just received the evidence from police and should be able to reveal the material to the defense by the end of the week.

The case will return for election and plea on August 17.

Markos’ undertaking requires that he have no contact with the complainant, whose identity is protected by a publication ban. He should also stay away from her place of residence and places of employment or training.
