The Halifax Regional Council Appoints Interim Chief Administrative Officer

The Halifax Regional Council has appointed Brad Anguish as the soon-to-be acting chief administrative officer for the municipality. In a media release on Wednesday, municipal staff announced that Anguish will take on the role of CAO on an interim basis starting on 8 September.

“We are at a crucial point for the future of the municipality,” says Mayor Andy Fillmore. “Mr. Anguish’s long history of public service, as well as his executive experience in many of our operational business units, will ensure the successful delivery of major projects and initiatives under his leadership.”

Anguish is a professional engineer who attended the Royal Military College of Canada for Engineering and obtained a Masters in Business Administration from St. Mary’s University.

The appointment comes as current CAO Cathie O’Toole prepares to resign from the role. O’Toole will remain in her position until 17 October to facilitate a smooth transition.

Regarding the search for a permanent CAO, the municipality has stated that they will not begin the process until there is more clarity from the province of Nova Scotia regarding potential legislative changes that may impact the role.

This decision comes amidst speculation that the provincial government may introduce a “strong mayor” model during the upcoming autumn session of the legislative power, which begins later this month.
