Halifax police say no evidence of foul play in death of employee at Walmart bakery

Halifax police have provided an update on the tragic death of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur, who was found deceased inside a commercial oven at a Walmart in the city’s west end last month. The authorities have confirmed that the circumstances surrounding Kaur’s death are not suspicious, and there is no evidence of foul play.

Kaur, who was a Walmart employee, immigrated to Canada with her mother approximately two years ago. Described as a “young beautiful girl who came to Canada with big dreams,” Kaur’s passing has left a profound impact on the community. The Maritime Sikh Society has organized an online fundraising page in her memory, highlighting her aspirations and the devastating loss felt by those who knew her.

It was Kaur’s mother, who also worked at the store, who made the heartbreaking discovery of her daughter’s body inside the bakery oven on October 19. The incident prompted a temporary closure of the Mumford Road store, but it has since reopened its doors to customers. Additionally, Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour has lifted a stop-work order for the bakery and a piece of equipment at the store as of October 28.

In response to the tragedy, Walmart has announced that the bakery oven where Kaur was found will be removed from the premises. The company clarified that the removal was always part of a standard remodel program being implemented nationwide.
