Halifax teens raise $40K for humanitarian aid in Lebanon

A group of compassionate teenagers in the Halifax area have come together to raise funds and bring awareness to the dire situation in Lebanon, where over one million people have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Jude Chedrawy, a 15-year-old Lebanese-Canadian student at Sacred Heart School of Halifax, was deeply moved by the suffering of his homeland and decided to take action. He founded HeartForLebanon HRM, an organization dedicated to providing relief to those affected by the conflict.

The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah may have taken effect, but the devastation continues as both sides accuse each other of violating the agreement. Tens of thousands of Israelis and approximately 1.2 million Lebanese people have been forced to flee their homes due to the violence.

Since its inception in early October, HeartForLebanon HRM has raised nearly $20,000 through online donations. The Canadian government, in collaboration with the Canadian Red Cross, has agreed to match these contributions, doubling the impact of the fundraising efforts.

All the funds raised will go towards the Canadian Red Cross humanitarian needs fund for Lebanon, which provides essential services such as shelter, food, water, and medical assistance to those in need. A spokesperson for the Red Cross expressed gratitude for the support from community organizations like HeartForLebanon HRM.

Samuel Bassil, another 15-year-old student working alongside Chedrawy, has personal connections to Lebanon and has witnessed the turmoil firsthand. He emphasized the importance of helping those who are suffering and highlighted the contrast between the peaceful life in Canada and the strife in the Middle East.

Chedrawy, motivated by the well-being of his 12-year-old cousin living in Lebanon, is committed to making a difference. Despite the distance, he stays connected through text and photo updates, constantly reminded of the challenges his cousin faces on a daily basis.

The determination and hard work of these young activists serve as a beacon of hope in the midst of tragedy. Their unwavering dedication to supporting the people of Lebanon is a testament to the power of compassion and solidarity in times of crisis.
