Halifax Walmart removing piece of equipment after worker found dead
The tragic incident at a Halifax Walmart where a 19-year-old woman, Gursimran Kaur, was found dead in the commercial bakery oven has prompted the company to take action. The oven, where the young employee’s body was discovered on Oct. 19, is now being removed from the store.
Following the discovery of Gursimran Kaur’s body, Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration issued a stop-work order on the bakery and a piece of equipment. This order was lifted on Oct. 28 after compliance was confirmed by the department.
In a statement, Walmart expressed deep sadness over the situation and mentioned that the removal of the oven had always been part of a standard remodel program being implemented nationwide. The company confirmed that the oven will no longer be used in the store once it is removed.
The Department of Labour stated that their investigation is ongoing, but did not provide additional details. According to their website, workplace investigations involving major accidents or fatalities can take up to two years to complete.
Halifax Regional Police have not shared any new information on the case, stating that the investigation is complex and involves multiple partner agencies. A memorial of flowers that was placed outside the store in memory of Gursimran Kaur has been taken down.
As of now, Walmart has not announced when the store will reopen. The community continues to mourn the loss of Gursimran Kaur, remembering her as a gentle spirit. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death remains ongoing, with authorities working diligently to uncover the truth.
The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of workplace safety and the need for thorough investigations in cases of accidents or fatalities. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Gursimran Kaur during this difficult time.
